The report also highlighted more subtle forms of sock puppetry. At DeepMind, the entire ethics board was found to consist of CEO Amelia Roth using different accents and personality quirks for each "member." Roth's assistant, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed, "Tuesday meetings are a nightmare. I have to help her change wigs and glasses between each statement."

Not all companies relied on fabric-based fraud. TechNova's ethics board turned out to be a sophisticated chatbot trained to generate vague, non-committal responses to ethical dilemmas. "It's an AI-powered solution to AI ethics," explained CTO Robert Chang. "We're living in the future we're trying to regulate."

The tech industry has responded to the study with a mix of denials and deflections. A joint statement from several major firms read, "We categorically deny these allegations and stand by the integrity of our ethics boards, whether they're made of cotton, wool, or synthetic blends."

As regulators scramble to address this newfound sock drawer of ethical oversight, one thing is clear: the road to responsible AI development may be longer and more twisted than previously thought.
